Answer to Question 1

High neuroticism often leads to rumination that then leads to negative emotions or even depressive states well beyond the event. Ruminators recycle old hurts and grievances so that they have trouble recovering following a stressful interpersonal encounter.

Answer to Question 2

High neuroticism individuals are more likely to appraise situations negatively even when the situations are nonthreatening (high primary appraisal) and to lack confidence in their ability to utilize personal resources to cope with or gain mastery over these situations (low secondary appraisal). For example, thoughts of This always happens to me and I guess I'm just cursed or something suggest a predominance of helplessness-oriented secondary appraisals.
