The essential features involved in a paraphilia are recurrence and intensity of the sexual behavior that involves a nonhuman object, or the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner, a child, or a nonconsenting person. The behavior causes significant distress and interferes with a person's ability to work, interact with friends, and other important areas of one's life.
