PID is usually caused by untreated bacterial STIs, especially chlamydia and gonorrhea. PID infects the female genital tract, including the endometrium, Fallopian tubes, and the lining of the pelvic area. Long term complications include ectopic and tubal pregnancies, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility.
