Loneliness is defined as the painful feeling of wanting more human contact or connection than you have; it has to do with whether or not one craves more contact or connection than one has (as opposed to some absolute level of social contact or relationship quality). According to the social psychological definition, loneliness can be about the quality of one's relationships or the quantity of one's relationshipsthough it tends to be about quality.
ii. Compared to others, people who are lonely are
1 . equally intelligent, attractive, and socially skilled
2 . less adept at figuring out others' emotional states
3 . likely to sleep less well, and to take longer to recover from illnesses and injuries
