Answer to Question 1

It has been shown that good-looking people have more friends, better social skills, and
a more active sex life. Beauty can give the attractive individual an advantage. For
example, research by Downs and Lyons (1991) showed that Texas judges set lower
bail and imposed smaller fines on suspects rated as attractive rather than as
unattractive. However, beauty also has its pitfalls. When one is attractive, it is hard to
tell whether attention received is for one's good looks or for actual performance. A
second disadvantage is that there is pressure to maintain appearance, pressures that
could contribute, for example, to disordered eating such as bulimia and anorexia
nervosa.
