Answer to Question 1

Counterfactual thinking refers to imagining what might have been given a particular situation or outcome. For example, if a student received a low grade on a test and then thought of an imaginary outcome that could have occurred had he or she studied more, then that student is engaging in counterfactual thinking.

Answer to Question 2

Terror management refers to efforts to come to terms with the certainty of death and its unsettling implications. One kind of thinking that helps with terror management is the belief that supernatural powers outside of humans' understanding and control can influence humans' lives. Research indicates that when humans are reminded of their own mortality, beliefs in the supernatural are strengthened.
