Answer to Question 1

Bettye Caldwell and her colleagues developed a measure for evaluating children's' home environments and called it HOME, an acronym for Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment.. With this method, researchers directly observe parent-child interaction in the home. The HOME inventory contains six subscales which are better predictors of young children's later IQ scores than social class, mother's IQ, or infant IQ scores. Longitudinal research also shows that the home environment is connected with occupational success as an adult. The subscales are: (1) Parental emotional and verbal responsiveness; (2) avoidance of restriction and punishment; (3) organization of the physical environment; (4) provision of appropriate play materials; (5) parental involvement with child; and (6) opportunities for variety in daily stimulation.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
