Answer to Question 1

Answer: Advantages of PCR over Southern blot: smaller specimen volume, more rapid laboratory procedure (1-2 days vs. more than 4 days), lower cost, amenable for use on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue.
Advantages of Southern blot over PCR: no meticulous attention required to prevent carryover or contamination of laboratory samples by extraneous DNA as in the PCR procedure

Answer to Question 2

Answer: HTLV1 infects T-helper lymphocytes and causes them to proliferate by up-regulating IL-2 and its receptor. Asymptomatic HTLV1 infection is found in 15 of people in Japan and the Caribbean islands. About 0.1 of infected individuals eventually develop adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.
