Answer to Question 1

Answer: Graft-versus-leukemia is a positive consequence of stem cell transplantation. GVL occurs when immunocompetent donor T cells attack the residual leukemic cells. A delicate balance of immunocompetent donor T cells is needed because the occurrence of GVHD and GVL is highly variable and subjective to individualized patients.
