Nucleated red blood cells in the peripheral blood are a common finding in beta thalassemia patients. Explain why.

Answer to Question 1

Answer: As a result of impaired globin chain synthesis, the bone marrow responds by producing more red blood cells to compensate for the impaired oxygen delivery function. Because of the high BM turnover of erythroblasts, premature release of nucleated erythroblasts is common.
