Jane presented to the ED with complaints of painful abdominal cramping and diarrhea. She has had about 10 watery stools today. Upon questioning, the ED physician noted that she had just returned from a trip to city in the Midwest that had a recent outbreak of cryptosporidium. Her symptoms mirrored those experienced by those reported in the newspaper, so a stool sample was obtained and was positive for the same protozoan. Jane was at high-risk to contract the disease since she is undergoing immunotherapy for scleroderma.
