Jane presented to the ED with complaints of painful abdominal cramping and diarrhea. She has had about 10 watery stools today. Upon questioning, the ED physician noted that she had just returned from a trip to city in the Midwest that had a recent outbreak of cryptosporidium. Her symptoms mirrored those experienced by those reported in the newspaper, so a stool sample was obtained and was positive for the same protozoan. Jane was at high-risk to contract the disease since she is undergoing immunotherapy for scleroderma.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
