As a researcher conducting observational research, one can be a participant (the researcher actively participates in the situation in which the research participants are involved) or nonparticipant (the researcher does not participate in the situation in which the research participants are involved). In addition, the researcher can be disguised (the participants are unaware that the researcher is observing their behavior) or undisguised (the participants are aware that the researcher is observing their behavior).
