Answer to Question 1

1, 2
Explanation: 1. Fogging occurs when there is agreement with part of what was said. Negative inquiry is
effective for clarification. Telling the nursing supervisor it is unfair is incorrect because it is
confrontational in nature. Questioning why the nursing supervisor is opposed to the method is
incorrect because why questions put the listener on the defensive. Telling the supervisor her
decision will certainly cause a staffing problem is incorrect because absolutes promote
confrontation.

Answer to Question 2

1
Explanation: 1. The nurse manager should plan to meet with administration when there is sufficient time and
the supervisor seems receptive. Negative inquiry is used after a request has been denied.
Compromise occurs after a request has been denied. Persistence and repetition are used after a
request has been denied.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
