Answer to Question 1

Answer: Artifacts from the Americas suggest that native people began smoking tobacco thousands of years ago, often as part of religious rituals. With colonization and the establishment of global trading routes, the practice of smoking, chewing, or sniffing tobacco soon spread to Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Babies born to women who smoke are more likely to be born too early or to have a low birth weight, both of which are conditions that increase their risk for illness or death. Toxic chemicals that enter the mother's bloodstream are passed on to her fetus. This may increase the baby's risk for birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate, as well as lifelong health problems such as cerebral palsy, developmental delay, and learning disorders. Premature newborns are at increased risk for respiratory distress, jaundice, and other complications. Smoking during pregnancy has also been linked to miscarriages, stillbirths, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
