This may increase the baby's risk for birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate, as well as lifelong health problems such as cerebral palsy, developmental delay, and learning disorders. Premature newborns are at increased risk for respiratory distress, jaundice, and other complications. Smoking during pregnancy has also been linked to miscarriages, stillbirths, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
