There are two main reasons. First, the benefits have not been experienced evenly. Many farmers are unable to afford the new seed varieties and have thus been unable to compete in the market place; this has led to many farmers losing their lands. Second, the new seed types require vast applications of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Beyond the financial cost of these additives, there is the problem of environmental pollution.
