What was the primary reason that the beaver and songbird populations were also diminished from the area?
 
  A) The wolf population was feeding on the beaver and songbirds.
  B) The rivers were full of sediment, making it difficult for beaver to swim and songbirds to drink water.
  C) The elk population was feeding on the beaver and songbirds.
  D) The temperatures in the area were warming, making it difficult for the beavers and songbirds to survive in warmer weather.

There are two main reasons. First, the benefits have not been experienced evenly. Many farmers are unable to afford the new seed varieties and have thus been unable to compete in the market place; this has led to many farmers losing their lands. Second, the new seed types require vast applications of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Beyond the financial cost of these additives, there is the problem of environmental pollution.
