Answer to Question 1

ANS: T
Patients with chronic renal failure may require dialysis. In hemodialysis an arteriovenous shunt or fistula is created subcutaneously in either an arm or leg to provide access to remove the waste products from the blood by a semipermeable membrane of a dialyzer.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: F
The lymph nodes may be examined by frozen section to detect early and subtle metastases from prostatic carcinoma. If several nodes are positive for cancer, the patient is unlikely to benefit from a radical prostatectomy. If the nodes are negative, the urologist may proceed with a radical retropubic prostatectomy.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
