Answer to Question 1

Tough seed coats must be properly treated to ensure that the embryo is able to push
through it and begin growing. Seed manufacturers have specific treatments for
various seeds so that their rate of germination is very high

Answer to Question 2

Student answers will vary. A disadvantage to having a hard seed coat is that the tiny
embryo must be able to break out of it.
