Answer to Question 1

ANS: B
Hypokalemia may occur as a natural consequence of increased erythrocyte production. As large numbers of new erythrocytes are produced, levels of free potassium may fall, resulting in hypokalemia.
Hypokalemia, not hyperkalemia, may occur as a consequence of increased erythrocyte production.
Monitoring of calcium is not indicated.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Given the patient's symptoms, and because the individual is postop, the risk for bleeding exists, and measurement of the hemoglobin and hematocrit is a good means of detecting this.
Stool tests for guaiac are not indicated unless GI bleeding is suspected.
A platelet count would be indicated, but not before measurement of Hgb and Hct, which are the best indicators of bleeding.
Hypertonic fluids are not indicated, although isotonic fluids may be indicated.

These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).

It is believed that the Incas used anesthesia. Evidence supports the theory that shamans chewed cocoa leaves and drilled holes into the heads of patients (letting evil spirits escape), spitting into the wounds they made. The mixture of cocaine, saliva, and resin numbed the site enough to allow hours of drilling.
