Answer to Question 1

The vitelline membrane must be pierced with a toothpick. The vitelline membrane is the sac enclosing the yolk. Without piercing, steam will build up in the yolk. It may explode during cooking or when cut with a fork. The toothpick hole allows the steam to escape.
