Answer to Question 1

A color gradient places people along a continuum from light to dark skin color rather than in two or three distinct racial groupings. The presence of color gradients is yet another reminder of the social construction of race. Terms such as mestizo Hondurans, mulatto Colombians, or African Panamanians reflect this continuum of color gradient. In the United States, Latinos tend to avoid taking on the label of being White or Black, although lighter-skinned Hispanics generally distinguish themselves from Black Americans. Social scientists speculate whether in time, like the Irish almost a century ago, Latinos will come to be viewed as White rather than as a third collective group in addition to White and Black Americans.
