Answer to Question 1

Answer: Under the ecological approach to defining health it is recognized that a variety of social conditions exist that one can work to improve, but that are at the same time somewhat out of personal control. Social determinants are the economic and societal conditions in which people live and which can impair their health or help them to thrive. Some examples would include
Availability of resources to meet daily needs, such as educational and job opportunities, living wages, or access to healthful foods
Social attitudes such as discrimination and bias
Public safety versus exposure to crime
Social support and social interactions to buttress general concepts of health
Exposure to mass media and emerging technologies of communication such as the Internet or cellular phones
Socioeconomic conditions such as inner-city poverty
 Access to quality education
 Access to flexible transportation

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Specific: Your goal for change should be well-defined and entirely clear to you.
Measurable: Include in your goal statement objective criteria evaluating your success.
Attainable: Does the research you did earlier convince you that you can achieve your goal?
Relevant: Make sure that the goal you're working toward feel right for you.
Time-based: An effective SMART goal has a specific time frame.

For about 100 years, scientists thought that peptic ulcers were caused by stress, spicy food, and alcohol. Later, researchers added stomach acid to the list of causes and began treating ulcers with antacids. Now it is known that peptic ulcers are predominantly caused by Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that normally exist in the stomach.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.

As many as 28% of hospitalized patients requiring mechanical ventilators to help them breathe (for more than 48 hours) will develop ventilator-associated pneumonia. Current therapy involves intravenous antibiotics, but new antibiotics that can be inhaled (and more directly treat the infection) are being developed.
