There must be sufficient fat and carbohydrates for energy needs. If not, the body must use the ingested protein for energy. This increases the work of the kidneys because protein increases the amount of nitrogen waste the kidneys must handle. The diet should be limited to 40 g protein daily, with sufficient fat and carbohydrates to meet the energy needs.
