Answer to Question 1

Alcohol requires no digestion and is readily absorbed by simple diffusion into the blood. Although some alcohol is absorbed from the stomach, most (80) is absorbed from the small intestine. The rate of alcohol absorption is influenced by whether or not there is food in the stomach (the presence of food in the stomach dilutes the alcohol and delays gastric emptying) and the concentration of alcohol in the beverage. Alcohol is most rapidly absorbed when the concentration is less than 30 (60 proof). Drinks with a high alcohol concentration delay gastric emptying, which slows absorption.
