Answer to Question 1

ANS: Anorexia nervosa is characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss. It occurs mostly in women and results in a distorted sense of body image and a misperception of body size. Bulimia nervosa involves cycles of binge eating and purging. Purging can be described as any behavior that assists in getting rid of food, including excessive exercise and abuse of diet pills, diuretics, or laxatives. Binge eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of binge eating without purging.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A low-carbohydrate diet has a reduced intake of fiber and phytochemicals. Reducing your intake of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables may put you at risk for heart disease, cancer, constipation, high blood cholesterol, and deficiencies of vitamins A, E, and B6, folate, calcium, iron, zinc, and potassium. The high protein content of these diets may cause the loss of calcium and thus increase your risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones.
