Answers may vary, but should cover the following points:
Interval training alternates repeated periods of intense exercise with periods of lower-intensity exertion. The harder
intervals of strenuous activity should be no longer than 1 to 5 minutes. After a brief, but still active, rest, the person
continues the exercise but at a more moderate pace. For example, a runner might sprint down the path at an all-out
pace for 3 minutes, then slow down and continue running (or jogging) at a more moderate, more sustainable pace
for a longer period of time. Interval training should not be done every day.
Athletes and others at a higher tness level use interval training. For example, runners, swimmers, and cyclists use
it to improve their times during competition. Others may use it to more quickly improve their exercise intensity in
the improvement stage of their tness program.
