Answer to Question 1

A job description helps employees understand what is expected of them and to whom they report. Although there is no standard format, most job descriptions include job title, immediate supervisor, job summary, job duties, and job specifications. The job description serves as a basis for rating and classifying jobs, setting wages and salaries, and conducting performance appraisals. It helps organizations comply with the accrediting, contractual, legal, and regulatory directives of the government or other institutions, and it provides a basis for decisions about promotions and training. In addition, it can be adapted for use in recruiting and hiring prospective employees.

Answer to Question 2

Strategic planning is broad in scope and addresses the organization's overall goals. Strategic planning occurs over a period of several years and is usually undertaken by the organization's senior managers. It focuses on formulating objectives; assessing past, current, and future conditions, trends, and events; evaluating the organization's strengths and weaknesses; and making decisions about the appropriate course of action. The strategic plan guides the development of operational plans. Operational planning is short-term planning typically done by mid-level managers. It deals with specific actions, expenditures, and controls and with the timing of these activities in a formal, structured process.
