A mixture of immiscible liquids (both water-insoluble) is subjected to steam distillation. At
90, the vapor pressure of pure water is 526 mm Hg. If the vapor pressure of compound A is
127 mm Hg and that of B is 246 mm Hg at 90:
  (a) what is the total vapor pressure of the mixture at 90?
  (b) would this mixture boil at a temperature above or below 90?
  (c) what would be the effect on the vapor pressure and boiling temperature by doubling the
  amount of water used?

Question 2

Explain how you would purify octyl acetate from a mixture of octyl acetate and methylene
chloride. (You will first need to look up the boiling point of octyl acetate in a suitable hand
book, Internet site, or online source. See Technique 17, p. 198.)

Answer to Question 1

(a) 899 mm Hg
(b) below 90
(c) no effect

Answer to Question 2

Methylene chloride boils at 40C and octyl acetate at 211 (Aldrich Catalogue, 2000-2001 edi
tion). First distill the methylene chloride using simple distillation. Then prepare for vacuum
distillation: cool the distillation flask, add boiling chips for vacuum distillaion, and add a
round-bottom flask to the vacuum adaptor. Connect the apparatus to a vacuum source and
distill the octyl acetate by vacuum distillation.

Though “Krazy Glue” or “Super Glue” has the ability to seal small wounds, it is not recommended for this purpose since it contains many substances that should not enter the body through the skin, and may be harmful.

Did you know?

It is believed that the Incas used anesthesia. Evidence supports the theory that shamans chewed cocoa leaves and drilled holes into the heads of patients (letting evil spirits escape), spitting into the wounds they made. The mixture of cocaine, saliva, and resin numbed the site enough to allow hours of drilling.
