Draw an ideal distillation curve (temperature vs. milliliters of distillate) for a 50:50 mixture of
two miscible liquids. How might one achieve such an ideal distillation?

Question 2

Given a mixture of compounds G and H. At 75C,
  XG = 0.50 XH = 0.50
PG = 900 mm Hg PH = 400 mm Hg
  (a) Which compound has the lower boiling point?
  (b) What is the partial vapor pressure of G? of H ?
  (c) If the applied pressure is 760 mm, will the mixture boil at 75C?
  (d) What is the composition of the vapor at 75C?

Answer to Question 1

An ideal distillation such as illustrated below is achieved when a fractional distillation is per
formed, using a fractionating column of the proper HETP for the boiling point difference of
the two miscible liquids.

Answer to Question 2

(a) G
(b) G: PG x (0.50) = 450 mm
H: PH x (0.50) = 200 mm
(c) 450 + 200 = 650 mm Hg, which is under 760 mm Hg and therefore it will not boil
(d) G: 450/650 = 69 mol
H: 200/650 = 31 mol

When Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, he called "zero degrees" the lowest temperature he was able to attain with a mixture of ice and salt. For the upper point of his scale, he used 96°, which he measured as normal human body temperature (we know it to be 98.6° today because of more accurate thermometers).
