Answer to Question 1

Distillation is simply a reduction of a liquid that has been boiled until the volume is reduced via evaporation and in the process increases the vapors alcohol content. Alcohol is not created by distillationinstead, it merely concentrates and purifies the alcohol. Initially, a fermented beverage, known as a wash or mash, is heated to the boiling point within a still (the device used to distill the beverage). Since the two significant variants of the wash (water and ethanol) will vaporize and condense at different temperaturesthe ethanol will vaporize and then recondensed to create a new mixture which can be further aged and/or flavored by the distiller.
