Cultural deficit hypothesis refers to the notion that deficiencies in the backgrounds of diverse children hinder their academic preparations for school. Later researchers suggested that a more useful way to regard minority children is in terms of their being culturally different. The culture compatibility hypothesis followed, stating that children are more likely to experience improvements in learning if instruction is consistent with the child's own cultural practices.
