Answer to Question 1

Answer: In vitamin B12 deficiency, there is a defect in the degradation of propionyl CoA to MM CoA. As a result, propionyl CoA accumulates and replaces succinyl CoA in fatty acid metabolism. This impaired fatty acid metabolism causes demyelination of peripheral neurons.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Vitamin B12 is needed to convert 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to folate. Consequently, vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to folate deficiency.
