Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder in which individuals suffer a definite break with reality. About 2.5 million people in the United States have schizophrenia. Symptoms of schizophrenia can be divided into two categories: positive and negative. Positive symptoms represent what might be described as excesses. They include such things
as hallucinations, delusions, and bizarre behavior. Negative symptoms can be considered behavioral deficits. They include social withdrawal, apathy, and lack of emotions.
