Pros: Methodology is formalized and systematic, it is open to public critical review, whereas private thoughts, at best, have limited exposure to public inspection. Methodology can enhance those traits that are desirable for a certain task. (Or it can suffocate them, if the methodology is ill-chosen.) Methodology can standardize the development process.

Cons: Methodologies are overly complex. Methodologies are often not contingent on the type or size of a project. A methodology may be inflexible, not allowing changes to requirements during development.
