 Gossip. When people don't feel so good about themselves, they sometimes resort to talking about other people. The psychological reasoning for this is if they can bring someone else down, it will elevate them, in some way, above the other person. By talking about someone else, they can have the feeling that they are in control, more in the know, and that they have more value and worth. Unfortunately for them, this is not possible, as no one has any more value or worth than anyone else.
Rememberwe are what we think. Spreading negative thoughts creates and intensifies negative feelings and emotions. It may bring a short-term pleasurable feeling, but in the long run, gossip creates negative social and emotional problems as well as guilt. People who frequently gossip often entertain mistaken paranoid thoughts that others are talking unfavorably about them as well.
 Whine and complain. Like gossiping, thinking and speaking in a complaining, poor-me way may seem like a solution, but it does nothing to solve problems and is a possible cause of stress. Whining doesn't deal with the problem directly but, instead, makes the problem seem bigger than it really is by expanding it in the mind. Nobody enjoys being around someone who is constantly telling everyone how bad things are by vying for sympathy or pity for their problems.
 Blame others. A surefire way to release yourself from responsibility and convince yourself that you don't have to deal with a problem is to blame others. But this solution is short-lived. On the surface, this way of dealing with problems makes people feel more in control of the situation, but blaming someone else for the consequences of your actions merely shows an unwillingness to accept responsibility. If you don't accept responsibility, you deny yourself the opportunity to effectively problem-solve. Blaming also damages relationships and leads to feelings of anger, frustration, and helplessness.
 Self-inflict pain. When a person is stressed, the fight-or-flight response is hard at work gearing up to avoid a potential pain. Sometimes we already feel severe emotional pain because of emotional traumas such as abuse or neglect. One way that some people choose to try to deal with that emotional distress is to create a physical pain to replace it. Typical examples of self-inflicted pain are deliberately cutting oneself, pinching, pulling out hair, or hitting oneself. Experiencing a physical pain to try to drown the emotional distress may result in temporary relief, but as an alternate method of managing stress, it is ineffective because it adds emotional stresses including guilt, shame, and embarrassment. If this is used as a method to cope with emotional distress, the best solution may be to get help from a counselor or a licensed therapist.
 Overdo it. Any activity that is healthy in moderation becomes unhealthy and leads to more stress when it is overdone. Eating food, for example, is a healthy and positive part of effective living. But overeating can lead to an unhealthy existence with the added risk of disease and a compromised lifestyle. Sufficient and satisfactory sleep is a key component in reducing stress levels, but oversleeping to avoid important activities or to waste time can be detrimental. Frequently, when people oversleep, they don't feel any better. The body and mind need only a certain amount of sleep for optimum functioning. More sleep than this can be counterproductive. Natural sleep patterns are interrupted and a person may feel groggy and sluggish throughout the day.
No harm comes from watching a moderate amount of television as a diversion or distraction from the stressors of the day, but spending many hours in front of the television can prevent people from doing the important things in life. Other common activities that can become problematic when they are overdone include working, talking on the phone, surfing the Internet, playing video games, or spending time with friends. Even leisure activities such as exercising, which normally would be stress-reducing, can become troublesome. Almost anything can be unhealthy if it is done in excess.
 Attempt suicide. The worst option for managing stress is suicide. Attempting suicide indicates that a person believes he or she has run out of options. Suicide eliminates the possibility for all other possibilities and devastates family members and friends. Something else always can be done even if it isn't immediately apparent.
