1. Eat a healthy diet containing adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D.
2. Engage in regular weight-bearing exercise.
3. Engage in regular strength-training exercise.
4. Avoid smoking.
5. Avoid excessive alcohol use.
6. If suffering from anorexia nervosa, get immediate treatment to maintain bone mass.

Answer to Question 2

1. Create a legally valid advance directive that includes specific instructions about medical procedures, being given food, water, and medication via tubes, being given pain medication, and organ donation.
2. Appoint someone to serve as your health care proxy (agent) for decision-making.
3. Discuss your wishes with your physician and health care proxy.
4. Distribute copies of the directive to your physician, proxy, attorney, family members, and/or close friend.
