Answer to Question 1

Two factorsdrought and conflicthave been immediate causes of famines in recent years. In recent years, the Sahel region of Africa has been the site of two major famines caused by drought. The countries of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Rwanda, Sudan, Mozambique, Angola, and Congo have experienced famine in the 1990s due to conflict. North Korea has also experienced famine recently due to drought and the failure of centrally planned agriculture.
Severe hunger is also the result of famine and drought. People throughout most of Africa, North Korea, Haiti, and Bangladesh are suffering from severe hunger.
Chronic malnutrition occurs with an improper diet, which can happen because of a lack of availability of food or because of an improper diet. This is a significant problem in India, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Pakistan, and China.

Answer to Question 2

The answers to this question will vary by the chemical or drug product. If the product or drug chosen by the student is not hazardous you might ask them to look at the manufacturing process for the product or drug. It is not unusual for there to be some hazardous materials used in production.
