Complications associated with castration of the horse include injury to patient, handler, or
surgeon; infection of surgery site, cords, or abdomen; excessive bleeding; excessive swelling
secondary to poor drainage and/or lack of enforced exercise; peritonitis secondary to
schirrous cord and infection; herniation of intestines through external inguinal ring.
