Answer to Question 1

A
Restating allows the patient to validate the nurse's understanding of what has been communicated. Restating is an active listening technique. Judgments should be suspended in a nurse-patient relationship. Closed-ended questions ask for specific information rather than showing understanding. The patient has no way of knowing whether the nurse understands.

Answer to Question 2

D
This response will help the patient see alcohol as a cause of the problems, not a solution. This approach can help the patient become receptive to the possibility of change. The other responses directly confront and attack defenses against anxiety that the patient still needs. They reflect the nurse's frustration with the patient.
