Answer to Question 1

) Steam results in the conversion of unavailable Mn to available Mn.
Many field soils contain large quantities of Mn leading to Mn toxicity from
pasteurization. 2) Soils rich in organic N can build up toxic levels of ammonium
particularly, during the period two to six weeks after pasteurization. Steam and
chemical pasteurization suppress the populations of ammonifying and nitrifying
bacteria. The ammonifying population reestablishes before the nitrifying
population. In the period when the former exists, but not the latter, ammonium is
generated from organic matter and it can not be converted to easily leached nitrate.
Thus, ammonium builds up. Plants have a lower tolerance to high levels of
ammonium than to nitrate.

Answer to Question 2

A sterilization cover is attached to the rake which drags behind it. The
length of the cover is designed to require 30 minutes to pass over a given point.
