You lay on your back and watch the stars for an entire night. You focus on one star and notice that it does not rise or set, nor does it trace circles in the sky. What is your latitude on Earth? Which star would be at your zenith if you stood up? Which significant feature of the celestial sphere lies along your horizon?
 
  What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

a) Explain which star is apparently brighter to you as viewed from Earth on a clear night, a star with a negative value or a star with a positive value. b) If star A has an apparent visual magnitude that is more negative than star B, which is the brighter star?

Answer to Question 2

a) The negative star is the apparently brighter star. b) The more negative value of apparent magnitude is the brighter star.
