Answer to Question 1

The leader sets the tone through his or her actions, words, and by what he or she allows to happen in the group. In addition to what the leader models, what he or she allows group members do or say to each other may also impact the tone of the group. If the leader allows members to verbally attack each other, a negative tone will prevail and members will not feel safe to share. By thinking about what kind of tone the leader wishes to set, the leader may choose different skills to achieve the desired tone.
