Answer to Question 1

This was started 5 days after admission and after anything had passed through the GI tract. The feeding was going into the small bowel and was more concentrated than the intestinal mucosa. Since the bowel had to adjust to the feeding, the physician was being cautious by trying to stimulate the GI tract to make sure it would tolerate the feeding.

Answer to Question 2

IBW = 106 + (12 x 6) = 106 + 72 = 178 lbs.

IBW = actual weight/IBW = 235/178 = 132
