Answer to Question 1
Her condition is the same as in Case Study 10 with a few added symptoms. By not following orders and taking prescribed medication, it is highly likely that Mrs. CL brought this attack, with the resultant anxiety, tests, and expense, on herself. The principles of the diet would be the same as in Case Study 10: small frequent meals; avoid gas-forming foods; do not lie down after eating; avoid caffeine; do not eat in a rush; try to eat in a relaxed atmosphere; chew food extremely well; eliminate everything that has a history of causing reflux; avoid alcohol; avoid aspirin. Because of her weight problem, and because fat slows gastric emptying, Mrs. CL should be on low-fat diet with fried foods eaten very infrequently, if ever.
Answer to Question 2
wt = 125/2.2 = 56.8 ht = 61 x 2.54 = 154.9
BEE = 655 + 9.6 x 56.8 = 1.7 x 154.9 - 4.7 x 81
= 655 + 545/3 + 263.3 - 380.7
= 1082.9
1083 x .3 (activity factor) = 324.9 = 1083 = 324.9 = 1408 or 1400
