Answer to Question 1

1c of salad dressing/day = 720 kcals. He could substitute this with the low-kcal or fat-free dressings that are quite good and have 16 kcals/T or less. This would represent a savings of about 464 kcals/d but would still allow Mr. Y to have a lot of salad dressing. Low-kcal or fat-free margarine could replace regular margarine and butter; baked or broiled foods can replace for fried foods; low-fat or fat-free/low-kcal snacks can substitute for the candy bars, peanuts etc. Sugar substitute can be used in place of sugar. Air-popped pop corn with a butter substitute or the fat-free spray margarine is an excellent substitute for fatty snacks.

Answer to Question 2

If Mr. Y cannot or will not drink enough milk or consume enough cheese and/or yogurt in his diet to obtain his Ca requirement, he could take an over-the-counter supplement. Tums make a suitable supplement, as long as they are not taken to excess, which could inhibit digestion by decreasing pH.
