Untreated GERD may lead to esophagitis, inflammation of the lower esophagus, because sto-mach acid irritates the esophageal mucosa. Hiatal hernia may cause GERD, but not the reverse. Peptic ulcer disease and dumping syndrome are not related to GERD.
