Mrs. G accompanies her 12-year-old daughter to the clinic for a routine visit. She is obviously upset about her daughter's weight and repeatedly tells both the nurse and daughter how unattractive she looks.

Your best response to the mother would be: 1. Criticism results in low self-esteem and can promote eating disorders.
   2. Closely monitor her food intake and restrict high calories foods.
   3. Talk with her teachers and make sure she is not eating junk food at school.
   4. During puberty children gain weight but lose it again during adolescence.

Answer to Question 1

1

Rationale: Frequent criticism of children results in low self-esteem and can promote eating disorders. Restricting food choices can be seen as a punishment unless the child is included in planning. Talking with teachers could make the child feel worse about herself and monitoring of food at school is an improbable solution. Childhood obesity is related to poor eating habits and lack of exercise rather than age.

Answer to Question 2

B
Feedback:
Iron-fortified infant cereal is traditionally the first solid food introduced.
