The other three processes would occur a long time after a meal, after a fast, or after exercise, when glucose stores are low. In glycogenolysis, glycogen is converted back to glucose. Gluconeogenesis is conversion of fat and protein to glucose. Production of the hormone glucagon increases blood glucose levels by stimulating glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.
